Road & Track Experiences the Fastest Viper Ever

by Scott Anderson : Repost by Sherman Dodge

Very cool YouTube Video with a cockpit view. You have to listen to the way the engine sounds in this Viper and how smooth she shifts. Here at Sherman Dodge we promote safe driving under 200 mph.

Dodge recently invited Shaun Bailey, Road & Track Associate Engineering Editor, to drive the Dodge Viper ACR-X in the inaugural Viper Cup race at Virginia International Raceway. Bailey describes his experience behind the wheel in a column posted here and you can watch it on the video above. Money quote:

“I knew the car would be fast and stick in the corners well; I just wasn’t prepared for how well. I’ve driven nearly every production car made since 2000, but nothing on the street compares to the lateral grip and cornering thrill of a real race car. And on top of that, the 640-horsepower V-10 pushed the Viper down the back straight to something approaching 170 mph…racetrack speeds I’m unfamiliar with.”

The magazine also looks at the history of Viper in this video, which also is worth a watch.

We've been following Hurst's progress of the cars ever since, and even got the chance to get behind the wheel of the prototype car for a brief stint. We recently made the trip down to Hurst Performance Vehicles' headquarters in Irvine, CA to see just how stock Challengers are transformed into one of their limited edition muscle cars.
We’ve seen how Hurst Hemi Challengers are put together, but the last time we tried to drive one we couldn’t get above 25 mph because of the prototype wheels. To correct that hideous oversight, Hurst slapped a couple of production wheels on a black and a white version of their Challenger, and we took both out for their yearly physicals. Just like the song went, it was ebony and ivory living in perfect harmony. Like King Kong and the Abominable Snowman. Follow the jump for the story.

When we last drove the car – at parking lot speeds – we admitted we had no idea how the thing would handle serious driving, but the suspension changes should coax some additional measure of ability. The Challenger SRT8 we reviewed was straight-line fun, but exhibited a tiny bit of fail when turning the wheel any number of degrees off center.

Frankly, as far as we’re concerned, that’s all right. The Challenger isn’t a sports car, it’s a a muscle car, and muscle cars have never been about exceptional handling. Muscle cars are meant to be imposing, definitely brash and undeniably loud. Muscle cars are supposed to make an impression, and beyond that, leave an impression. A decked-out Challenger certainly does all of that.

The Hurst treatment isn’t about turning a Challenger into a full-bore sports car. It’s about heightening the elements that make the car a fantastic template for an all out hot rod. The Challenger’s girth alone is going to register with you when you see it. Make it lower, louder, meaner, firmer and gold-stripy-er, and the resulting car makes you feel guilty if you drive it without wearing a tank top, leather jacket and torn Levi’s. Smoking a Camel. Listening to Jan & Dean.

That’s because the Hurst Challenger’s primary aim is to be true to the founder’s philosophy, which was to create gentleman hotrods – cars that could compete with the best for sheer power, but if you weren’t some lowlife punk simply trying to get under the next poodle skirt, you found the car refined enough to please your loftier driving requirements.

If that’s the hot rod you want, both the black and white Series 5 Challengers are all the hot rod you’ll need.

In getting everything ready for the Bob’s Big Boy lights, there have been a few changes made to the production car versus the show car we drove last year. The rear spoiler on the pre-production car stuck up like a duck tail; the retail version simply extends back flat from the decklid and also loses the Hurst badge. The curvature from the hub to the spokes on the production wheels is less dramatic. And with the help of BFG, Hurst was able to get the staggered wheel setup they wanted for the 20-inchers shod in BFG KDW rubber. Speaking of those wheels, they are massive – you don’t realize how big they are until you see them lying upside down on the shop floor looking like industrial vats.

And it is always makes us smile to see big wheels, because that is usually indicative of big power. And we like big power.

First up was the white car. Like the black one, it has 572 horsepower and 528 lb-ft torque, but in this case it’s channeled through an automatic. The word “automatic” in this case has a precise technical meaning, being the kind of transmission. Yet “automatic,” we quickly learned, also describes how easy it is to access the thrills. To go crazy in an auto Hurst, this is what you do: get in, start the car, put it in gear and hit the throttle. It is Viper-esque in the nearly uncontrollable immediacy of its burnouts, in the there’s-nothing-to-do-ness of the action. If you live in a cul-de-sac, you wouldn’t even need to drive the car anywhere. Just pull it out of the driveway, crank the wheel, mash the pedal and spend a minute doing 28 donuts. You could even do them with your morning coffee. It’s that simple. Then put the car away and wash the smell of smoke off. Done.

The automatic Hurst Challenger is like a pit bull: you’ve got to watch out for it because it’s kind of crazy and even though you’re the master, you’re always wondering “Are you going to go bonkers today?” If you want a car for the daily commute that can kick concrete and asphalt in the grilles of all those Camrys and 5-Series’ you’ll be stuck in traffic with, this is it.

The manual car is what we came to spend time in, though. Almost the first thing we noticed was that the Hurst shifter makes a lot more sense in the manual. When it’s something to be used, as opposed to a decorative piece, it makes perfect sense. And it doesn’t even feel like you’re holding a manual transmission – it feels like you’ve got brass knuckles. And that ass-kicking feeling helps keep you in the hot rod mood.

If that won’t do it, there’s the Magnaflow cat-back exhaust, which emits lusty, Hemi-powered detonations from its four pipes.

Once we were able to dig into the car, however, what we really dug was the Vortech supercharger. Because it’s centrifugal, it kicks in almost like a turbo and progressively adds more boost. The faster you go, the faster you go. And if there’s anything better than huge acceleration, it’s accelerating acceleration.

You’ll get to know the traction control light very well in first gear if you leave the driving aids on. Turn them off and use at least a little bit of your brain, and you can get some Holy Moly! jackrabbit starts out of the car. You’ve got to shift to second almost as soon as you push the pedal in first gear, but once the car has some rev range to play with you can get a ridiculous amount of power down. If the city ever catches you, they might send you a bill for destroying the streets.

We actually preferred running starts because they gave us the chance to downshift and hear the noise, and we could be a little less cautious with the throttle without fear of the rear traction disappearing. The tires will break loose in third gear if you want them to. Not that we tried. Much.

As for that suspension, the car rides beautifully on its Eibach kit. The new arrangement keeps the car’s mass and weight in check, keeping it even through turns and staying steady during side-to-side inputs, and at no time did those ginormous wheels and tires intrude into the driving experience; they didn’t crash over bumps or noisily fall into potholes.

But it’s not a sports car – it’s a Challenger, and even though it’s highly tuned, that one word, “Challenger,” should tell you everything you need to know about what it does and how it does it.

The car really is a toned down Viper with rear seats and a proper trunk, and is no less wonderful for it. As colleague Mike Harley said, “It does exactly what it looks like it does.” It imposes, it frightens, it impresses, it rumbles, it growls. It’s a gentleman’s hot rod, and whenever you want to go rodding, you’ll have plenty of hot to put plenty of other rods in your rearview mirror.

Whether you decide to be a gentleman about it is entirely up to you.

2010 model Ford Mustang badgeThe Ford Mustang is an automobile manufactured car by Ford Motor Company. It was initially based on the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car.[1] Introduced early on April 17, 1964,[2] the 1965 Mustang was the automaker’s most successful launch since the Model A.[3]

The Mustang created the “pony car” class of American automobile — sports car-like coupes with long hoods and short rear decks[4] — and gave rise to competitors such as GM’s Chevrolet Camaro,[5] AMC’s Javelin,[6] and Chrysler’s revamped Plymouth Barracuda.[7] It also inspired coupés such as the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri, which were exported to the United States.

The Chevrolet Camaro is an automobile manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand, classified as a pony car[1][2] and some versions also as a muscle car.[3][4] It went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed as a competing model to the Ford Mustang. The car shared its platform and major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced for 1967.

Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived again on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.[5]

[edit] Background
Before any official announcement, reports began running during April 1965 within the automotive press that Chevrolet was preparing a competitor to the Ford Mustang, code-named Panther.[6] On June 21, 1966, around 200 automotive journalists received a telegram from General Motors stating, “…Please save noon of June 28 for important SEPAW meeting. Hope you can be on hand to help scratch a cat. Details will follow…(signed) John L. Cutter – Chevrolet Public Relations – SEPAW Secretary.” The following day, the same journalists received another General Motors telegram stating, “Society for the Eradication of Panthers from the Automotive World will hold first and last meeting on June 28…(signed) John L. Cutter – Chevrolet Public Relations SEPAW Secretary.” These telegrams puzzled the automotive journalists.

On June 28, 1966, General Motors held a live press conference in Detroit’s Statler-Hilton Hotel. It would be the first time in history that 14 cities were hooked up in real time for a press conference via telephone lines. Chevrolet General Manager Pete Estes started the news conference stating that all attendees of the conference were charter members of the Society for the Elimination of Panthers from the Automotive World and that this would be the first and last meeting of SEPAW. Estes then announced a new car line, project designation XP-836, with a name that Chevrolet chose in keeping with other car names beginning with the letter C such as the Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette. He claimed the name, “suggests the comradeship of good friends as a personal car should be to its owner” and that “to us, the name means just what we think the car will do… Go!” The new Camaro name was then unveiled. Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers, “What is a Camaro?” and were told it was “a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.”[7]

The Camaro was first shown at a press preview in Detroit, Michigan, on September 12, 1966, and then later in Los Angeles, California, on September 19, 1966. The Camaro officially went on sale in dealerships on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year.

[edit] First generation: 1967-69
Main article: Chevrolet Camaro (first generation)

A first-generation CamaroThe first-generation Camaro debuted in September 1966, for the 1967 model year, up to 1969 on a new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and would be available as a 2-door, 2+2 seating, coupe or convertible with a choice of 250 cu in (4.1 L) inline-6 and 302 cu in (4.9 L), 307 cu in (5.0 L), 327 cu in (5.4 L), 350 cu in (5.7 L), or 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 powerplants. Concerned with the runaway success of the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet executives realized that their compact sporty car, the Corvair, would not be able to generate the sales volume of the Mustang due to its rear-engine design, as well as declining sales, partly due to the bad publicity from Ralph Nader’s book, Unsafe at Any Speed. Therefore, the Camaro was touted as having the same conventional rear-drive, front-engine configuration as Mustang and Chevy II Nova. In addition, the Camaro was designed to fit a variety of power plants in the engine bay. The first-generation Camaro would last until the 1969 model year and would eventually inspire the design of the new retro fifth-generation Camaro.

[edit] Second generation: 1970-81
Main article: Chevrolet Camaro (second generation)

A second-generation CamaroIntroduced in February 1970, the second generation Camaro was produced through the 1981 model year, with cosmetic changes made in 1974 and 1978 model years. The car was heavily restyled and became somewhat larger and wider with the new styling. Still based on the F-body platform, the new Camaro was similar to its predecessor, with a unibody structure, front subframe, an A-arm front suspension and leaf springs to control the solid rear axle. Road & Track magazine picked the 1971 SS350 as one of the 10 best cars in the world in August 1971. RS, SS and Z28 performance packages gradually disappeared. The Z28 package was reintroduced in 1977, largely in response to the huge success of its corporate stablemate, the Pontiac Trans Am. 1980 and 1981 Z28′s included an air induction hood scoop, with an intake door that opened under full throttle.

[edit] Third generation: 1982-92
Main article: Chevrolet Camaro (third generation)

A third-generation CamaroThe third generation Camaro was produced from 1982 to 1992. These were the first Camaros to offer modern fuel injection, Turbo-Hydramatic 700R4 four-speed automatic transmissions, five speed manual transmissions, 16 inch wheels, a standard 4 cylinder engine and versatile hatchback bodies. The cars were nearly 500 pounds lighter than the long running second generation model. The legendary IROC-Z was introduced in 1985. In 1987, the potent L98 5.7 V-8 engine was an option on the IROC-Z, paired with an automatic transmission. The “20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition” was offered in 1987 and a “25th Anniversary Heritage Package” was available in 1992 but was sold with a 305 High output engine instead of the 350 V8. Beginning in 1988, the famed 1LE performance package was introduced, optional on street models and for showroom stock racing in the U.S. and Canada. The B4C or “police” package was made available beginning in 1991. This basically created a Z28 in more subtle RS styling.

[edit] Fourth generation: 1993-2002

A fourth-generation CamaroThe fourth-generation Camaro debuted in 1993 on an updated F-body platform. It retained the same characteristics since its introduction in 1967: a coupe body style with 2+2 seating (with an optional T-top roof) or convertible (introduced in 1994), rear-wheel drive, and a choice of V6 and V8 engines. The standard powerplant from 1993-1995 was a 3.4 liter V6. A more powerful 3.8 liter V6 was introduced as an option in 1995 and made standard in 1996. The LT1 V-8 engine, which was introduced in the Corvette in 1992, was standard in the Z28. Optional equipment included all-speed traction control and a new six-speed T-56 manual transmission; a four-speed automatic transmission was also available. Anti-lock brakes were standard equipment on all Camaros. The 1997 model year included a revised interior, and the 1998 models included exterior styling changes, and a switch to GM’s aluminum block LS1 used in the Corvette C5. The Camaro remained in production through the 2002 model year, marking 35 years of continuous production. Production of the F-Body platform was stopped due to slowing sales, a deteriorating market for sports coupes, and plant overcapacity.[8][9]

[edit] Fifth generation: 2010-
Main article: Chevrolet Camaro (fifth generation)

A fifth-generation CamaroBased on the 2006 Camaro Concept[10] and 2007 Camaro Convertible Concept, production of the fifth-generation Camaro was approved on 10 August 2006. Oshawa Car Assembly produces the new Camaro [11] which went on sale in spring of 2009 as a 2010 model year vehicle.[12][13]

Production began on March 16, 2009. The 2010 Camaro is offered as a coupe only in LS, LT, and SS trim levels.[14][15] LS and LT models are powered by a 3.6 L (220 cu in) V6 producing 312 hp (233 kW) mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with manual shift. The SS is powered by the 6.2L (376 cu in) LS3 V8 producing 426 hp (318 kW) and is paired with a 6-speed manual. The automatic SS gets the L99 V8 with 400 hp (300 kW). The RS appearance package is available on both the LT and SS and features 20-inch wheels with a darker gray tone, halo rings around xenon headlamps, and red RS or SS badges.

On April 1, 2010, the Camaro was named the World Car Design of the Year at the World Car of the Year Awards.[16]

But there are plenty of stories we’re looking forward to telling you about on the design/development, technology, on- and off-road manners and the overall spirit that went into making the Grand Cherokee. We’ll post these stories over the course of the next few days on this blog.
